Just last night I was reminded of...
Apr. 2nd, 2010 01:22 pmToday we are going to see Clash of the Titans! \o/
Anyway, I have brief thoughts wrt Winchester family dynamics that developed from last night's drunken pontifications with Kassie:
So, I think an important thing that Dean is missing in how he and Sam view family is how he factors in to Sam's view of their dynamics. Namely, Dean was the peacekeeper. He made sure that things ran smoothly in the family. Sometimes that meant taking Sam out to do something Dad wouldn't allow, sometimes that meant being the authority figure. There were a lot of times growing up where Dean was not 100% on Sam's side (see: S1). It's just been in this season that Dean has allowed himself to admit that he has some serious issues with John.
From Dean's perspective, Sam has always been the most important thing. Of course his heaven would be happy firework memories. From Sam's perspective, Dean spent a large part of their childhood being Daddy's little soldier. Sam's views of family are always going to be a lot murkier than Dean's because there will always be those times when Dean fell in line with Dad. And Sam didn't get the crusts cut off his sandwiches. His slice of normal came in college, in those bits in heaven where he got to be someone who could have a dog or a sit-down family holiday dinner. That isn't actually a reflection on his love for Dean.
Throughout the course of the series, Sam has chosen Dean over and over, albeit in ways where Dean might not understand that that's what's happening. It is obvious (to anyone who isn't Dean) that Sam loves him just as deeply as Dean loves Sam. They have ~*~CO-HEAVEN~*~. Whatever other memories were shown, they were experiencing them together, which is by far the most significant aspect there.
In conclusion: SOULMATES!!!
Really, though, Dean's issues of self-worth are becoming more and more problematic.
Dear Dean,
Please look in the mirror and repeat after me. "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darnet my brother loves me!!" Daily affirmations. Use them!
Kisses,
EJ
Maybe Dean should read some of Chuck's books. Surely there might be some insight there for him. Hmmm.
So, yeah. I might have more thoughts later. I'M SURE YOU'RE EXCITED.
