I have been kind of crazy busy IRL. Was out of town last weekend, am going to visit Pants this weekend with a bunch of stuff to do this week and, well, tomorrow to do it. So what did I do today? Well, I was going to check my FL really quick and then be VERY PRODUCTIVE. Instead, I fell down this rabbit hole of WTFery wrt the fanfic survey.

It's fascinating, really. I mean, thinky thoughts, yeah. But also, the bulk of that thread is like an orgy of really intelligent comments pointing out the OH SO MANY ways the "science" guys are wrong. Is it wrong that I find it kind of hot? Maybe just ironic? Dare I say it's kind of like brain porn? YEAH I WENT THERE.

Anyway, there's also this article that is relevant to the discussion. Generally, I am predisposed to be offended by mainstream articles that talk about female sexuality, but iirc, I found that one interesting.

I guess the thing I find most irritating is the assumption that you can ignore the cultural context of something like this. BTW? You can't. It is always a factor. Really, I keep running into this mindset in a variety of places and it makes me boggle hardcore. Not enough WTF in the world.

Anywho, if you like women bein' all smart and shit, this is relevant to your interests.

HELLS NO I PREFFERS MY WIMMINS HOT, NEKKID, AND IGN'ANT.

That survey was gross and weird, and I'm glad I picked GOD as my favourite fictional character.

SOMETIMES I FEAR THAT THIS IS THE ACTUALFAX CASE FOR THE MENFOLKS.

I did not take the survey at all. I'm not a joiner. I think my favorite part of that clusterfuck is this: ....and spare me your condescension about not understanding the point or purpose or means of your research. I also have shiny neuroscience degree from a respected university and your academic pedigree does not impress me. (http://shaggirl.livejournal.com/186106.html?thread=3062010#t3062010)

Oh, yeah. That's the spot. *growls*

I CANNOT RESIST SURVEYS, NO MATTER HOW RUBBISHY. Basically I just love participating in and skewing the results of other people's sad attempts at amassing empirical data. OH SCIENCE. IS THERE NO ONE YOU CANNOT MAKE LOOK FOOLISH? *cuddles*

"I'm not a joiner."

I was all "wtf does carpentry have to do with this?" GO ME.

I can't even believe this is turning into such a thing. I haven't even seen the survey itself, and I plan not to thankyouverymuch, but just seeing how fucking idiotic that person is who made the blatantly offensive and grossly brainless comment about transsexuals makes my teeth hurt.

Some people really should have been drowned at birth, y'know?

INORITE? And yet, the collective smackdown is so eloquently glorious and mighty, it makes me a little misty-eyed. I mean, the thing is, fandom definitely has its petty moments, but seeing a thread like that full of undeniable pwnage? Makes me very proud of our smartypants community of awesome.

Fandom FTW!

Omg ha ha the Boondock Saints trailer kind of distracted me from more interesting and interesting posts like this one. That article is pretty fascinating - and that Maria Beatty sounds ridiculously tempting.

I feel I'm going to need to see some questions from that survey to fully grasp what the fuck is going on. I didn't even hear of this until a few days ago while testing out a brand new tool on my Dreamwidth, and went around asking people what the shit's this all about. Got some nice links and was kind of horrified at the mess, but I still feel out of the loop.
