Carver Edlund Writes—
A note to my readers:
I'm truly touched that Sam and Dean have affected you so profoundly. I confess, they remain close to my own heart and it's been my deepest pleasure to share their story with the world.
I had sincerely intended for the end of Swan Song to be my final word on the adventures of Sam and Dean, as I feel that once a story is put out into the world, the interpretation is forever out of the hands of its creator. However, your response has been so overwhelming that I'd like to address a few things. Please forgive my self-indulgence.
How someone can interpret the end as anything but hopeful is beyond me. As many of you have pointed out, Supernatural is, at its heart, the epic love story of Sam and Dean. Their love is the core of what it means to have free will. They were able to defeat both Heaven and Hell because they learned to love each other more than they need each other.
For those who complained that they didn't end up together, my only defense is that things which seem obvious to me might be more ambiguous to you. Or maybe I just wonder what story you're reading. There has never been any question that they would find their way back to each other. Their path, in every incarnation, is a shared one. They will always find their way back.* But that, dear readers, is a whole different story. One that belongs to Sam and Dean alone.
I remain humbly yours,
Carver Edlund
* For those who argue that this sounds like "destiny" when my ultimate point has been the triumph of free will, I'm going to go ahead and say I'm not getting into a theological debate about it. You'll just have to believe me when I tell you that it's more complex than that.
P.S. While I am flattered that my stories have inspired some of you to write your own, my lawyers have advised me to request that you not send me any copies or links. I think it's best for all involved that the fourth wall remain at least partially erected.

The epic love story of Sam and Dean, indeed.
I'm a little facepalmy about adding that coda, though, not gonna lie. Oh fangirls, WHY?

Is why I loved the last two seasons of the show. Thanks for this.
